KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 — Two container ships ran into each other at Port Klang earlier this evening and caused a fire to break out, several media reported.

The Star Online cited Port Klang Authority chairman Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha as confirming the incident as taking place at the shipping hub’s Westport around 8pm.

No one has yet been reported injured.

The New Straits Times reported on its website tonight that one of the ships is called the Alrifa and the other is believed to be a Filipino-owned ship, citing an anonymous source with the Fire and Rescue Department.

National news agency Bernama reported an emergency call was put through to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department at 7.38pm, which sent out a team that reached the scene of the conflagration at 8.17pm and quickly moved to tow one of the ships one kilometre out to sea to stop the fire from spreading at the wharf.

“Another ship is still at Wharf 20 and work to put out the fire is still being carried out, but no casualties were involved in the incident,” the Fire Department’s operations mobilisation unit officer, Ahmad Aidil Ab Majid, was quoted as telling Bernama in a text message.

The state news wire further reported that efforts to douse the blaze were still continuing as of 10pm.

It was not able to provide further information on the status of the ships as investigations are still underway.
