LONDON, Nov 16 — Although the chicken tikka masala is often found on the menu in Indian restaurants, you may be surprised to find out that the dish may not have been invented in India.
Chicken tikka masala comes from combining chicken tikka, — chunks of chicken marinated in spices and yogurt, that is then baked in a tandoor oven — with a masala (spice mix) sauce.
According to ethnic food historians Peter and Colleen Grove, who examined various origin-claims of the dish, the dish “was most certainly invented in Britain, probably by a Bangladeshi chef”.
While the origins of this dish may be disputed, its popularity has ensured that it remains a firm favourite on the menu.
This particular recipe from Jamie Oliver’s FoodTube channel features Chetna Makan’s version of the dish, which is made up of tender chicken marinated and baked in a spicy yogurt dressing before being tossed through a rich tomato sauce with cashew cream and coriander.
