KUALA LUMPUR — Putrajaya built thousands of kilometres in roads, rail and utility lines since 2010 as part of the National Transformation Programme, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

Citing the 5,300km of new roads linking three million rural residents, he said this demonstrated the government’s commitment to developing the infrastructure in the country’s rural areas.

“Besides more rural roads, 1.7 million Malaysians across 340,000 homes gained access to clean water while another 144,000 households gained 24-hour access to electricity,” he said when launching the 5th National Transformation Programme (NTP) Annual Report tonight.

This was in addition to over 82,000 low-cost and affordable homes that were either built or refurbished in the same period.

Other achievements he held up included the Ampang LRT extension that will serve 190,000 passengers daily and the first phase of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) that will begin operation by December with an estimated ridership of 400,000 people.

“The entire Sungai Buloh to Kajang line will become fully operational by July 2017,” Najib said.

Sarawak, which will hold its state election on May 7, was the biggest single beneficiary of the National Key Result Areas spending under the NTP, the prime minister added.

“The toll-free Pan Borneo Highway for instance, will span 1,089 kilometres in Sarawak and is valued at RM16 billion to Sarawak citizens,” he said.

Saying there continued to be a “missing link” to Kanowit despite the progress, Najib tonight announced a RM150 million road that will link the area to Song in the Kapit division of the state.
