SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 17 — Just after launching the new version of its iOS app, online storage provider Box is giving away lifetime access to 50GB of cloud storage to users who try out the new software. While the promotion is only available to users who download the app through the App Store, the 50GB of storage can then be accessed from any platform.

With this promotion, Box aims to lure users away from other cloud storage services, which are generally less generous when it comes to free storage, such as Dropbox (2GB), Apple iCloud (5GB), Microsoft SkyDrive (7GB) or Google Drive (15GB). Only French company Cloudwatt and Kim Dotcom's notorious Mega service currently give users 50GB for free.

To take advantage of Box's special offer, valid through February 14, 2014, users simply download the new version of the Box app for iOS. An e-mail is sent for each new registration and, after the account is validated, users can access their cloud drive with 50GB of space. The account can then be managed through any mobile platform (iOS, Android, Windows Phone) or through a PC.

The free Box accounts are not entirely without limits: files over 250MB cannot be shared, and bandwidth is restricted to 10GB per month. Of course, Box offers more flexible solutions with a paid subscription.

The new Box app for iOS, available for download on the App Store, allows users to view over 100 file formats in high quality imaging (PDF, PowerPoint and Word viewers), data security and encrypting options, and the ability to access files in offline mode. — AFP-Relaxnews
