JOHOR BARU, Nov 13 — A 39-year-old single mother was sentenced to 75 years in jail by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to 10 charges of selling her two daughters aged 13 and 10 years  into prostitution.

The woman who is jobless, committed the offences between Oct 1 and Oct 7 this year in a budget hotel at Jalan Susur Dewata 1, Larkin Perdana, between 9.25am and 2.49pm. 

She admitted to forcing her daughters to have sexual intercourse with two Bangladeshi men while she watched. The men would pay her RM50 each, from which she would hand RM1, RM5, RM10 or RM20 to the victims.

Judge Kamarudin Kamsun sentenced her to 15 years on each of the charges with the first and second to run concurrently; third and fourth, to run concurrently; fifth and sixth, to run concurrently; seventh and eighth, to run concurrenty; and ninth and 10th to run concurrently.

The charges were framed under Section 31(1)(b) of the Child Act 2001 read together with Section 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a fine of RM50,000 or jail not exceeding 20 years or both, and in addition another five years and caning of not less than two strokes on conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Suhaila Shafi’uddin urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence in view of the seriousness of the offences and public interest as well as the trauma experienced by the victims.

“According to 2010-2015 statistics, 5,779 of the cases filed related to sexual abuse of children,” she told the court.
