KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 — OPS Cantas has moved to its next phase and the focus is now on gang leaders and also on crime syndicates involved in car thefts and house break-ins.
Yesterday, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur police carried out simultaneous operations to weed out such crime syndicates in the Klang Valley.
The round-the-clock operations resulted in the arrest of at least 24 people in Kuala Lumpur.
The Selangor figures are only expected to be released today.
City police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the operations were carried out in areas known for crime activities.
“The operation focused on these crime syndicates and based on tip-offs and police intelligence, 24 men were detained for armed robbery, theft, impersonating as government officials and drug smuggling.”
“All these are serious offences. Similar operations will continue as we have seen positive results on most of the raids so far.”
The operations in Selangor were carried out inseveral locations in Kajang and Serdang.
A total of 31 senior police officers and 103 policemen from the criminal investigation department were involved in the operations.
Seven budget hotels allegedly occupied by criminals and three stores where stolen goods were kept were raided.
Ops Cantas, aimed at crippling the underworld, was launched on Aug 17.
Under Phase One and Two of the operations, police have screened more than 170,000 suspects, nabbed 7,200 gangsters and seized 255 various weapons nationwide.
Phase Three is to track down crime kingpins and subsequently freeze their assets.
