KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said adopting and utilising new technology and methods has kept the country safe from those seeking to inflict harm.
Speaking at the soft-launch of the International Exhibition on National Security (Natsec) held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), Zahid said the importance of adapting was magnified in the face of the current global security climate.
He said new security technology would play an important role in confronting current security challenges to make the country a better and safer place.
“This event acts as a platform to further support the capabilities of enforcement agencies by providing a look at the latest technology in the security industry.
“This is a unique opportunity to see and sample the current and future products and services encompassing every aspect of national security,” he said.
Zahid, who is also home minister, said security matter is top priority at present, adding that greater coordination and integration between security and law enforcement agencies at the local and international level was needed.
“Today, security is the top priority of not only Malaysia but also the rest of the world, as issues such as terrorism and violent extremism shapes the current global policies agenda.
“Therefore, we have to be prepared for the security challenges that may arise on many fronts because of the security environment’s volatile and unpredictable nature,” he said.
Zahid said Natsec would have a positive spill-over into the national economy by highlighting the country as a top choice for businesses and as a means of Foreign Direct Investment.
“Malaysia is moving from being an end-user to an active industry player in designing and manufacturing latest security products.
“Advancement of scientific and technological development is a key strategic factor to build capability in technology,” he said.
“Strengthening technological capability is always crucial element in enhancing a country’s productivity, and at the same time to remain competitive.”
Natsec will run concurrently with the Asian Defence Services (DSA) exhibition from April 14 to April 19, and will be primarily held at Mitec and several other locations.
The two programmes have attracted over 1,500 exhibitors, 350 foreign delegations from 45 countries in addition to 42,000 trade visitors from 70 countries.
