PETALING JAYA, Feb 19 — Politicians from both sides of the political divide have urged the highway authorities to expedite the demolition of the Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau toll plazas, fearing the structures may continue to pose a danger to more road users.
Parti Amanah Negara’s Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said such accidents were unfortunate and expressed his hope that the authorities will speed up the demolition of the toll plazas.
“I understand that it will take some time to safely remove the concrete structures as authorities need to take into consideration the safety of oncoming traffic.
“However, I urge the authorities find other means to do it quickly,” said Khalid.
This follows the fatal accident today at 12.55am, in which two were killed after a car that they were travelling in hit the pillar of the disused Batu Tiga toll plaza.
Previously, two friends lost their lives and one was injured in a similar accident on January 15 at the same toll plaza.
Shah Alam Umno chief Datuk Azhari Shaari also urged the highway authorities to hasten demolition work as the announcement to remove the structures was made during the budget hearing in October last year.
“Since the announcement was made for both tolls to be abolished, we immediately informed the highway authorities to remove the structures.
“Road users are at risk especially those who are not familiar with the highway. There are no clear signs.
“This is leading to more confusion and contributing to accidents,” he said.
Meanwhile, former operator PLUS Malaysia Berhad and the Malaysian Highway Authority have both stated that demolition work will be completed in March.
