KUCHING, March 7 — Sarawak is facing surplus of trained nurses who are still unemployed due to shortage of hospital and healthcare centres in the state to absorb them, said Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) youth chief Snowdan Lawan.
The state assemblyman for Balai Ringin said most of these trained nurses with diploma qualifications are from the Dayak community.
Snowdan said an ad-hoc committee consisting of PRS Youth, Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) and Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (DCCI) was formed to assist these nurses in securing jobs in hospitals and healthcare centres.
The efforts paid off when Econ Healthcare Group, during its recent employment drive, hired eleven nurses from Sarawak to work with the group.
Snowdan said the healthcare group was also impressed with those Dayak applicants who speak good Mandarin and English languages besides Malay.
He said although the recent employment drive by Econ Healthcare Group was a short one, it was a successful one and the ad-hoc committee would work on another employment drive.
Meanwhile Snowdan advised nurses with diploma qualification to acquire skills in specialised fields such as cardiac nursing, critical care nursing, dialysis nursing, emergency and trauma nursing, nursing management or even case management nursing.
He said there is a shortage of specialist nurses worldwide. — Bernama
