PETALING JAYA, April 21 — A man was shot dead in front of his girlfriend when they and two accomplices were confronted by police just as they were about to stage a robbery in a factory yesterday.

The incident took place in Jalan Kilang 51/A, Section 51 here when the suspect, identified as Mohd Nizam Subuh, rammed his car into a police vehicle in a bid to escape.

Petaling Jaya police chief Mohd Zani Che Din said police received a tip-off about a possible robbery in the area and sent a team there.

At about 5am, they spotted two cars and ordered the drivers to pull over. However, Nizam rammed his car into the police vehicle and also struck another policemen on a motorcycle in his bid to escape.

Zani said police fired several shots in self-defence and several shots were fired.

Nizam, 33, died at the scene while his girlfriend, who was sitting beside him, was hit on her hand and thigh.

Their two accomplices, who were in the other car, were arrested.

Zani said the policeman on the motorcycle suffered minor injuries.

Initial investigations showed the two cars were fitted with fake registration plates and were reported stolen in the Klang Valley last week.

“We also found tools and equipment used for break-ins in the cars,” he said.

The investigations also revealed the two accomplices had criminal records.

“They had 13 to 14 records for various crimes that included theft and robbery and were also on the police wanted list,” Zani said.

Police said the group had been active for some time and were believed to have been involved in a series of factory robberies in the Klang Valley.

Zani said the injured woman was sent to University Malaya Medical Centre for treatment. Nizam's body was sent to the same hospital for post-mortem.
