KOTA KINABALU, April 20 — Broadband penetration in Sabah rose to 72.4 per cent last year.

Sabah Minister for Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Siringan Gubat said this was a tremendous success as the rate was only 9.5 per cent in 2008.

“The Communications and Mulitmedia Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has taken more initiatives to expand broadband coverage, particularly 3G, in Sabah’s rural areas,” he said when winding up debate for his ministry at the State Assembly sitting here today.

State Rural Development Minister Datuk Radin Malleh said the poverty rate in the state was brought down to four per cent in 2014 as compared to 8.1 per cent in 2012.

He attributed programmes like 1Azam, Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) and housing aid for the success and that RM16.1 million had been allocated for poverty alleviation in the state this year. — Bernama
