JOHOR BARU, April 19 — Water rescheduling to 3,677 households began yesterday in Lok Heng, Kota Tinggi, about 40km from here.
Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ) said a similiar exercise will begin in Sungai Mersing (2,563 households) and Sungai Gembut (5,168) in the Mersing district, and Tenglu (5,579) in Kota Tinggi from tomorrow.
“The rivers where raw water is being pumped into the treatment plant for treating are drying up,” its corporate communications director, Jamaluddin Jamal, said.
“As such, we cannot draw enough water to sustain the needs of the residents there. Blame it on the dry spell.”
Jamaluddin said the water rescheduling exercise, which would last until May 15, would see supply on one day with the next two days without water.
He said the situation would be reviewed after that.
“In the the meantime, we urge the people to use water carefully. We are trying to preserve water for as long as possible,’ he said.
Jamaluddin said Sungai Sedili Kechil near Lok Heng, from which raw water was being pumped for treatment, was running low.
“Let’s hope for rain,” he said.
He also hoped the state goverment would carry out cloud-seeding in the affected areas soon.
