KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 — The Shariah Judiciary Department (JKSM) said it does not have figures on the cases of unilateral conversion to Islam in the country.
“Our deepest apologies, JKSM does not have such statistics as sought by yourself,” JKSM director-general and chief Syarie judge Tan Sri Ibrahim Lembut told Malay Mail Online recently via email.
Malay Mail Online had requested for the number of unilateral conversion cases brought to the Shariah courts, the number of such cases brought by those who had been converted as children but had now reached the majority age of 18, as well as the number of success stories in such cases.
The conversion of one’s child to Islam without the consent of the other parent is in the spotlight following the recent Court of Appeal ruling that upheld the unilateral conversions of M. Indira Gandhi’s children.
