LIMA, Oct 2 — A Spanish caver was rescued on Tuesday after being trapped in a cave in northeastern Peru for 12 days.

Univision reported that speleologist Cecilio Lopez Tercero fell in the Intimachay cave on September 18 and remained trapped 400 metres underground, where temperatures dropped to as low as 10 degrees Celsius and humidity reached 100 per cent.

Rescue workers tried to free the scientist for days, but heavy winds, rain and cold temperatures hampered their efforts.

On Tuesday Lopez was finally winched out on a stretcher by a pulley, then taken by helicopter to the airport in Chachapoyas, from where he flown to Lima to receive treatment, El Informador reported.

Lopez suffered two damaged lumbar vertebrae as a result of his fall.
