LOS ANGELES, Dec 3 — At CES 2015 in Las Vegas, AudioQuest will present its first headphones, the NightHawk, created in collaboration with French 3D printing company Sculpteo.
The AudioQuest NightHawk includes components made of “Liquid Wood,” a new sustainable material made of real wood and plant fibre that has been heated, liquefied and processed to be injection moulded. Moreover, the NightHawk is the first headset to be made using industrial 3D printing techniques.
The device has a single 3D printed part: a biomimetic grille inspired by the structure of butterfly wings. This element is said to both eliminate resonance and diffuse exterior sound, allowing the wearer to enjoy the purest sound possible.
“A grille like NightHawk’s, with its intricate diamond cubic latticework pattern, could not have been made five years ago,” said Skylar Gray, the designer behind the headphones. “The only way it could be created is through today’s advanced 3D printing. So, from the very start, we intended for NightHawk’s grille to be 3D printed. Designing with 3D printing in mind is quite liberating because there are far fewer restrictions and boundaries, enabling otherwise impossible forms and complexities.”
AudioQuest, a manufacturer known for its high-quality audio and video accessories, will attend CES 2015 along with Sculpteo, the 3D printing company that produces the grille. The NightHawk, which has won CES Innovation Awards in the “Eco-Design” and “Sustainable Technology” categories, will go on sale in 2015. Pricing details have yet to be announced.
