SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 12 ― Post-apocalyptic title “DayZ” maintains its position as Steam's top retail title but the free zombie survival game “Unturned” outperforms it ― and most of the rest of the store ― in terms of pure player numbers come Monday, August 11.

“DayZ” returns to top spot on the Steam retail chart, but not shown there is the free single- and multi-player title “Unturned,” visually similar to the blocky construction of “Minecraft” while thematically in line with the tense survivalism of “DayZ,” and built from the ground up by 17-year-old Nelson Sexton.

The free download is currently registering as Steam's fourth most popular game, according to third-party tracker SteamCharts.com, behind only the store's own “Dota 2” (free), “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” and “Team Fortress 2” (free); “DayZ” lies in 12th.

Released a month ago on July 7, “Unturned” offers its appreciative community an optional lifetime Gold Account Upgrade for $5, but at this time the vast majority of existing content is freely available to all, with Sexton providing a constant flow of content patches and updates as to his programming progress.

On GamersGate, the “Dungeons & Dragons Anthology” collects the two “Baldur's Gate” and “Icewind Dale” games, plus expansions, alongside “Planescape: Torment” and “The Temple of Elemental Evil”; together, the six are exceptionally good value during GamersGate's current bargain promo, especially with the slick-looking “Baldur's Gate” spiritual successor, “Pillars of Eternity,” due before the year's end.

For this week, the rest of GamersGate's chart is crammed with “Grand Theft Auto” titles, another beneficiary of a cut-price sale.

That comes on the verge of an impending release date announcement for the arrival of a spruced-up “Grand Theft Auto V” on PC, PS4 and XBO, suspected to be that of November 14 but with confirmation likely during Gamescom, which runs August 13-17. ― AFP-Relaxnews
