SEPANG, May 11 — Last year's World Junior champion Goh Jin Wei is excited by the opportunity to play with the seniors in the Uber Cup squad that plays in the Thomas/Uber Cup Final in Kunshan, China starting Sunday.
The 16-year-old is among three players — Soniia Cheah, Ho Yen Mei and Chow Mei Kuan — making their debut in the Uber Cup final.
The Uber Cup squad also has Tee Jing Yi, Vivian Hoo, Woon Khe Wei, Lee Meng Yean, Amelia Anscelly and Goh Liu Ying (captain).
"I am very excited to be in the squad because it is not easy to break into the team that plays in the most prestigious team tournament," said Jin Wei when met by Bernama at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport before heading to Kunshan, today.
Despite the pressure of playing at the highest level, age would not be a barrier for Jin Wei who hopes to take it in her stride.
The player from Bukit Mertajam, Penang had put up a splendid performance in the Thomas/Uber Cup Qualifiers that was held in Hyderabad, India in February.
In the Uber Cup competition, Malaysia have been drawn with defending champion China, Denmark and Spain.
Malaysia has never won the Uber Cup.
Speaking of the first match against China on May 15, Jin Wei pledged to give her best if chosen by the coach.
"It won't be easy to overcome the Chinese players who are seasoned campaigners in the competition but I am going to give my best shot," she said.
Jin Wei said the final closed door training session held over a 10-day period by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), would be very beneficial to all the players.
"I am more comfortable with the senior players now...they shared their experience and learned some skills. It was a good learning process. I feel my endurance is getting better from the past," said player who is now ranked world number 55. — Bernama
