KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — The national badminton squad’s campaign at the Indian Open Super Series Badminton Tournament ended after the only pair left standing, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong lost in the semifinals of the tournament, today.
The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallists lost in straight sets 15-21, 17-21 to Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Kevin Sanjaya SukaMuljo of Indonesia in the men’s doubles at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, according to Badminton World Federation (BWF) website.
Gideon/Kevin will face-off against compatriots and seventh seeds Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi in the final tomorrow.
Angga/Ricky advanced to the final after stunning fifth seeds, Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Cheol of South Korea in the other semifinal tie; winning in 21-18, 6-21 and 21-19.
The country’s challenge in the men’s singles event ended on Thursday after the only player left standing, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, suffered an unexpected defeat to Hong Kong veteran, Wei Nan in the second round.
Malaysia did not send representatives in both the women’s singles and doubles and also the mixed doubles events in the tournament which offers total prize money of US$300,000 (RM1.167 million). — Bernama
