KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Former Umno supreme council member Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar has tweeted his surprise that his open letter to Malaysians yesterday has been interpreted as a call to support the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th general election.
“I find it surprising and funny when my statements are perceived as supporting Barisan Nasional,” he wrote on the microblogging site early this morning.
In another tweet, the former Land Public Transport Commission chairman also said he was clear in his support of “positive changes, democracy and a fair election. But not only to support Barisan Nasional”.
In his open letter yesterday, Syed Hamid called on voters to vote for a “positive change” without fearing those in power.
He also said he hoped Malaysians have had a chance to hear “voices of reason” amid being distracted with “gifts, flashy ad campaigns and fearmongering tactics”.
“We as voters are not here to make the strong even stronger. Let us not fall into that trap.
“Come 9 May, let us all, my fellow Malaysians, vote with our conscience to make a positive change. Vote with your heart. Vote sincerely. Let good judgment prevail.
“Vote for people with integrity, honour, transparency, accountability and those who are hardworking and trustworthy, so that these qualities can be imbued in a government that they represent,” he said in the two-page letter.
