PETALING JAYA, Oct 31 — Two women escaped death after they were shot at close range by gunmen who made away with one of their handbags in Bandar Teknologi Kajang.
The victims — a 61-year-old moneychanger and her 31-year-old employee from Pakistan — suffered gunshot wounds to their chins and jaws on Sunday night and underwent surgery to remove the bullets yesterday.
Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said police believe robbery could be the motive.
“We are basing it on the occupation of the victims, but let us investigate first,” he said, declining to elaborate what was in the handbag.
The 9.30pm incident unfolded when the moneychanger, a Malaysian, dropped off her employee at a bus stop opposite a supermarket after work.
As the woman was about to get down from the car, a Proton Waja pulled over and a man fired several shots at both of the women.
A man was believed to have grabbed the handbag from the women before the Proton Waja sped off.
“We have reason to believe there was more than one robber involved. They were apparently donning ski-masks,” Ahmad Dzaffir said.
Police, who were alerted at about 10.10pm, sent both victims to Hospital Kajang.
Ahmad Dzaffir said police retrieved four spent bullet slugs from the scene and were trying to establish the identities of the robbers.
