KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 — The Pakatan Harapan Opposition pact will meet next week to decide on their candidate for prime minister if they win the next general elections, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said.
Its three component parties — PKR, DAP and Amanah — has steadfastly stuck with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as first choice despite his incarceration, but there have been rumours of a disagreement by influential newcomer Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
"I am informed that the Pakatan Harapan leadership will announce [the prime minister candidate] after the discussions.
"For me, the pre-requisite is the principle of reform and principle to seek justice in the country's democratic institutions, that is important," Nurul Izzah who is also Anwar’s daughter was reported as saying by Malay daily Sinar Harian.
Separately, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said that Anwar was still relevant in the current political landscape despite being allegedly written off by some analysts.
"That is the view of the analysts, they can make all types of analysis. But the fact is that Anwar's role is still important, whether he is inside or out.
"This is an effort to push people for a change that cruelty can happen to Anwar when he was deputy prime minister, what alone the people in the kampungs? This is an important message before the next general elections," he was quoted as saying by the same newspaper.
Azmin also said that the Opposition would continue to negotiate with PAS together with PPBM ahead of the coming general elections to ensure a united front.
