KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 — Local indie publishing company Buku Fixi has secured the rights to translate the back catalogue of DC Comics into Malay.
According to a post on their Facebook page today, the deal is a first for a Malaysian company.
The announcement was made in conjunction with the launch of Grafixi, a new entity within the Buku Fixi family that is dedicated to graphic novels.
The collaboration will kick off with the release of two graphic novels: Public Enemies and Supergirl, the post added.
Copies will be available from Buku Fixi’s booth at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2016, which will take place at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang from April 29 to May 9, 2016.
A special deal is also being offered at the fair: One graphic novel will cost RM30, but buy both and only pay RM50.
Buku Fixi is the brainchild of founder and writer Amir Muhammad.
As the story goes, Amir was first inspired to start Buku Fixi after noticing that the Malay-language fiction nominees in a local book awards ceremony all had “rindu”, “kasih” or “cinta” in their titles.
Although it started off specialising in urban pulp fiction in Malay and English, Buku Fixi has expanded to include imprints such as Fixi Novo (English-language Malaysian books), Fixi Mono (non-fiction), Fixi Retro (reprints of old Malay-language classics) and Fixi Verso (Malay translations of current international bestsellers).
The indie publisher also opened a brick-and-mortar store in Jaya Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya last year.
