KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — Contrary to speculation, leaders of the Save Malaysia movement did not discuss two senior politicians’ endorsement of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the next prime minister during its meeting today, a member of the non-partisan movement said.
Former Penang Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan said the issue was not raised during the three-hour meeting that started at 3.30pm.
“Nothing happened, no issue here,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted later.
Instead, he said the movement comprising politicians from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and the opposition as well as activists discussed the set-up of a central secretariat for its Citizen’s Declaration that kicked off last month.
“I am personally very happy to see that everyone in the central committee have common objectives and we are on the same wavelength,” he added.
He further said that the team will start their campaign to get one million signatures for its Citizen’s Declaration next week.
The nationwide campaign would include roadshows and talks, Khairuddin added.
Earlier, Khairuddin told Malay Mail Online that the issue of Ahmad Zahid’s endorsement may be raised during the meeting after the news sparked alarm among activists involved with the movement.
Former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, one of the senior politicians in the Save Malaysia movement spearheaded by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, recently endorsed Najib’s deputy Zahid as the next prime minister in a blog post on Tuesday titled: “Give Zahid a chance”.
Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also reportedly said on Wednesday that he “does not mind” if Zahid becomes the next prime minister.
Malay Mail Online was unable to reach to other members of the movement for more details on the meeting this afternoon.
