PUTRAJAYA, April 7 — Malaysia has set a “benchmark” for deradicalisation when it comes to dealing with terror threats, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Speaking at the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya, Zahid said that other countries have referred to Malaysia’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on deradicalisation.

“We believe in prevention, that is deradicalisation,” Zahid said.

“We have set a benchmark in that, and other countries are now referring to our SOPs, even though we are a small country,” he added.

Zahid was speaking today after his recent participation in the National Security Summit in Washington during which he said Malaysia agreed to take measures to prevent radioactive materials from falling into the hands of terrorists.

“Even in the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels, the attacks carried out also targeted places that had radioactive items.

“The terrorists wanted to get their hands on these items so they can build a nuclear bomb,” he said.
