KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Polls reform group Bersih 2.0 was finally handed the bill said to amount to RM65,000 from representatives of City Hall for cleaning up the mammoth Merdeka Eve rally in the national capital today.
The organiser of the August 29 and 30 rally that drew tens of thousands of people into the streets near Dataran Merdeka could not resist poking fun at the authorities on their Twitter account @bersih2, after some officials representing Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan failed to find their office last Friday.
“Kami terima ‘bil’ walaupun kami tolong bersihkan jalan Kuala Lumpur,” Bersih 2.0 tweeted this afternoon.
[Translation: “We received the ‘bill’ even though we cleaned up the streets of Kuala Lumpur.”]
Earlier today, the group had draped banners on the gates of its headquarters to help direct the minister’s men to their venue after the team went to the wrong address last week.
On Friday, Abdul Rahman had announced on Twitter that his officers had gone to the registered address of the Bersih 4 rally organisers’ office but found it to be locked and unattended.
It was followed by a series of tweets that revealed his team was in possession of the right address, but had gone to the wrong house.
Abdul Rahman has been vocal in criticising the Bersih 4 rally organisers, accusing of the group dirtying the streets during its two-day street demonstration.
