KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Selangor lawmaker Elizabeth Wong claimed a Twitter post on the Low Yat Plaza incident made in her name today is a fake and appealed for aid in tracing the source.

Wong pointed out that she has not been using Twitter for months and that she had not made any comments about the Low Yat incident - which involves an alleged theft that later resulted in a street fight - on social media site Facebook

“I have been alerted this afternoon of a fake Twitter status attributed to me regarding the Low Yat incident,” the Selangor state executive councillor said in a brief statement today.

Wong provided a snapshot of the tweet with a datestamp of July 13 reading: “Upahan UMNO menyerang Lowyat utk mcetuskan kekacauan bg menutup isu 1MDB. Sy akn di Low Yat jam 12tgh esok utk menyokong peniaga yg jujur”.

[Translation: Those who Umno hired attacked Lowyat to incite chaos to cover up the 1MDB issue. I will be at Low Yat at 12 noon tomorrow to support honest traders.]

“I will be alerting the relevant authorities to take the necessary actions on the culprits who faked my identity,” the Bukit Lanjan assemblyman for PKR said, urging those who have seen the false tweet or with knowledge of its source to inform her and to enable her to alert the authorities.

A riot broke out at Low Yat Plaza in the city centre last night that reportedly left five people injured after a Malay man was caught on Saturday by security guards at the complex for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a Chinese trader and handed to the police.

The youth later reportedly contacted his friends who reacted by heading to the store where the attempted theft allegedly happened, where they then assaulted the shop workers and vandalised the store with losses estimated at RM70,000, according to national news wire Bernama.

A mob then gathered at the shopping centre last night and fights broke out.
