KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — It’s probably the favourite station of commuters living in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

Not only does it connect them directly to Kajang (about 35km from Petaling Jaya), the largest town of Hulu Langat district in Selangor, but the Stadium Kajang MRT station is steps away from the famous Medan Sate Kajang and Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri.

It was reported that restaurants serving satay there have seen a 60 per cent rise in customers since the MRT began its operations in mid-July.

An elderly couple who wished to be known as Mr and Mrs Wong, whom we bumped into at the station, said they would make the trip just to have their satay fix.

“I’m so glad that we now have the MRT that goes to Kajang. We live in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (in Kuala Lumpur) and all we have to do is park our car at the MRT station there and take the train to come here. The ride is over one hour long but the journey is good. In fact, this is our third time here!

“The train is spacious and the air-conditioning system works really well. I also enjoy looking out the window especially when we’re on the elevated rail lines although my wife doesn’t quite fancy the dizzying height,” said Mr Wong.

He added that the half-price fare for senior citizens which amounted to RM2.30 per person (one way from the Taman Tun Dr Ismail stop) after discount was an added bonus.

The elevated station is part of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line which comprises 31 stops. Nineteen of the stations, including this, are new under the second phase and out of these, seven are underground stations. The service operates at a frequency of 3.5 minutes.

With three exits namely A, B and C, it makes it easy for commuters to get to their destinations from the station. To get to the satay joints, use Exit A or C and take the escalator down. Once you’ve reached ground level you’ll see the eateries on the opposite side of the road.

Exits A, B and C lead to Jalan Kelab, Lorong Mandaling and Jalan Stadium respectively.

The former is also the exit you should take to get to the St John Ambulance of Malaysia headquarters (for the southern Selangor area) and Pusat Perkhidmatan MCA Kajang (Malaysian Chinese Association service centre).

Apart from outlets that serve the popular Malay charcoal grilled meat on skewers, the station is also located close to the Kajang Stadium, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Yu Hua and Kompleks Mahkamah Kajang.

Apparently, the stadium which was built in the 1970s, was once the training ground for many national footballers.

Students from schools in the area also used to visit the stadium to practise sporting skills such as sprinting since the stadium was equipped with a proper running track and other amenities.

It is, however, undergoing reconstruction at present.

What could be another draw in the area is the Masjid Jamek Kajang. The mosque, which was recently re-opened after being closed for two years for renovation purposes, used to be bright yellow in colour. It is now painted in subdued brown tones befitting its position as a house of worship.

Apart from the obligatory daily prayers, the mosque, which was founded in the 1960s, also organises religious classes in the evenings.

Right below the station, close to Exit A is a bus stop where you can take feeder buses (T457, T458, T459 and T460) to various places including Masjid Jamek Kajang, Taman Punca Saujana, Pejabat Air Selangor, Kolej Vokasional Selangor and Kajang Prima.
