RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 15 — National diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee surpassed her semifinal target when she ended in 10th spot in the women’s 3m springboard final at the Rio Olympic Games in Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, here, yesterday.
Ranked sixth in the first three dives and slipped to 10th in the next two, Wendy accumulated a total of 306.60 points in the five-dive attempts, 99.45 points behind gold medallist Shi Tingmao who scored 406.05 points.
The Chinese divers swept the top two spots with He Zi picking the silver with 387.90 points, while the bronze went to Italian Tania Cagnotto who posted 372.80 points.
“I got nervous. It is not an excuse but that was what happened. I am disappointed as I had hoped to perform much better,” said the 23-year-old Wendy who scrapped into the semifinals on 17th out of 18 divers who qualified.
“I had targeted the semifinal but having made the final, I had hoped to perform better but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted,” said Wendy who had her parents, sister and brother-in-law on the stand. — Bernama
