GLASGOW, July 25 — National cylist Fatehah Mustapa rewrote the national record in the 500m time trial at the 20th Commonwealth Games here yesterday. 

However, in the event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Emirates Arena, Fatehah had to be satisfied with fifth place after clocking 34.667 seconds, overcoming the old mark of 34.898s set by herself.

The gold was won by Anna Meares of Australia who set a new Commonwealth Games record of 33.435s. The previous record was 33.758s which was also set by her.

Her compatriot Stephanie Morton took the silver in 34.079s while Jess Varnish of England had to settle for bronze after posting 34.267s. 

Fatehah, when met, said she was dissapointed at not being able to contribute a medal in her maiden Commonwealth Games but was satisfied with her achievement today.
“I hope to win a medal at the Asian Games in Incheon. South Korea after this,” she said.

Another national rider, Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, qualified for the first round of the men’s individual sprint today after finishing in seventh place in a time of 10.158s in the qualifying round today. The top 12 finishers qualify for the first round.

However, the Malaysian trio of Mohd Azizulhasni, Muhammad Edrus Yunos and Josiah Ng failed to finish among the top four to be in medal contention when they clocked an overall time of 45.501s which put them in sixth place in the men’s team sprint event.

In the event, New Zealand trio Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Edward Dawkins set a new Games record of 43.254s. The old record of 43.772s was held by the Australians.

They will be up against England’s trio of Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny, Kian Emadi in the battle for the gold medal. 

Australia’s trio of Nathan Hart, Shane Perkin, Matthew Glaetzer will take on Canada’s Hugo Barrette, Joseph Veloce, Vincent de Haitre in the decider for the bronze. — Bernama
