KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — World number one badminton singles player Datuk Lee Chong Wei wants to compete at the Badminton World Federation Super Series Championship finals from Dec 10-15.
“I cannot say I don’t want to play in the final round of the Super Series because Malaysia are the hosts. Maybe I can skip the championship if it’s is played in another country.
“I am aware local fans will be waiting for me at the stadium and I will try my level best not to disappoint them,” he said when met by reporters at the Malaysia Sports and Health Fair 2013 here today.
According to two-time Olympic silver medallist, he will not be competing in the China Open Championship starting Wednesday in Shanghai as he wants to rest due to an injured ankle.
“This ankle injury is not new. It is an old injury...during the Thomas Cup (in the final match at Wuhan, China last year). I have to rest a bit and will see the physiotherapist,” said the 31-year-old player from Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Chong Wei said his chances of performing at the Hong Kong Open from Nov 19-24 would also depend on his level of fitness.
Chong Wei tore a tendon on his ankle during his Thomas Cup match against Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark in May last year.
“I have played in many Super Series Championships and defended my performances this year. I decided to rest not only due to the injury but I need to prepare to face the new season starting in January (starting with the Korean Open and Malaysian Open).
“Furthermore, I also need to prepare for four important championships next year...it is quite tough. Not enough time to rest and train,” he said.
For the record, Chong Wei has played in 11 super Series this year and won five titles, in South Korea, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Japan.
In addition, he also performed at two major badminton championships this year, namely, the World Championship in Guangzhou, China and Sudirman Cup in Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama
