KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — The first trailer for Michael, the highly anticipated biopic on the life and legacy of pop legend Michael Jackson, has been released — offering a first look at the late star’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his debut role as the “King of Pop”.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the biopic will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, best known for Training Day and the film promises an intimate yet dramatic portrayal of Jackson’s meteoric rise from child prodigy to one of the most influential entertainers of all time.
The two-minute trailer revisits the singer’s most iconic moments — from Thriller’s legendary dance moves and the red leather jacket to his electrifying stage presence — while hinting at the personal struggles behind the global fame.
A family connection
The news report further stated that Jaafar, the son of Jermaine Jackson, steps into his uncle’s shoes in what many critics describe as an “uncanny transformation”.
The project marks his acting debut and has reportedly received full support from the Jackson family, who are also involved in the film’s production.
“I’m honoured to bring my uncle’s story to life,” Jaafar said in an earlier statement.
“It’s been an emotional journey stepping into his world and understanding the depth of his artistry and humanity.”
About the film
The film is written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator) and will cover both the triumphs and controversies surrounding Jackson’s life.
Fuqua said the biopic aims to explore “all sides” of the superstar — not just the fame and spectacle, but also the man behind the legend.
Michael is slated for worldwide release on April 24, 2026, after delays caused by reshoots and production restructuring.
Legacy and expectation
The trailer has already sparked excitement and debate among fans, with many praising Jaafar’s striking resemblance and mannerisms, while others question whether the film will address the darker aspects of Jackson’s story.
With lavish production, elaborate set recreations, and the use of Jackson’s original music, Michael is shaping up to be one of next year’s biggest cinematic events — a nostalgic yet complex tribute to one of pop culture’s most enduring figures.
