KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — After 18 years, Disney’s Princess Diaries 3 is finally in the works.

The script for the upcoming film is being penned by television writer Aadrita Mukerji, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to sources, it is a continuation from the Anne Hathaway-led series of films rather than a remake.

The producer of the first two Princess Diaries films, Debra Martin Chase will also be producing the third instalment while The Other Woman’s screenwriter Melissa Stack will be the executive producer.

Although not being presented with a deal yet, Academy award-winning actress Anne Hathaway had publicly expressed her interest in returning to the character.

“I would more than entertain it, I'm pulling for it,” she said in an interview with ET.

“If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” Hathaway added.

Andrews' last screen appearance was as the voice of Lady Whistledown of the 2020 hit Netflix series Bridgerton.

The 2001 film The Princess Diaries followed the adventures of American teenager Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), who found out she was an heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia.

The films were based on the novel series by Meg Cabot.

The first film amassed US$165.3 million (RM752 million) globally while The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) made US$134.7 million (RM612 million).

Both films were directed by late filmmaker Garry Marshall who passed away in 2016.
