SEOUL, July 26 — Big Bang’s TOP is a multi-hyphenate of many talents: Singer, actor, songwriter, and now curator.
The Korean Herald reported yesterday that the K-pop superstar, who also acts under the name Choi Seung-hyun, will make his debut as a curator at an auction to be held by Sotheby’s Hong Kong in October.
The collaboration is called #TTTOP to reflect his Instagram handle through which he often shares favourite artwork.
Part of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to Asian Cultural Council, a non-profit organisation, to support young Asian artists, Sotheby’s said in a statement.
“I hope struggling young Asian artists can be creative and work in a slightly more stable environment,” TOP added in the statement. “I will continue to work on similar projects.”
TOP, who is known to be an avid collector of designer furniture and contemporary art, has co-curated an Asian art exhibition at ArtScience Museum in Singapore.
In an interview with Sotheby’s, TOP revealed that his interest in art stemmed from his upbringing.
“All the women in my family, including my mother, majored in art. They were all either artists or art teachers. The Korean modern masters Kim Whanki and Lee Insung are both my blood relatives,” he was quoted as saying.
He also likened finding a great artwork to meeting one’s soulmate.
He added, “Once a piece enters my life, we become lifelong companions destined to love each other.”
