KUALA LUMPUR, 28 Nov — Graduates who are employed by the banking industry must become members of the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) and complete a mandatory programme on ethics and professional standards.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor, Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim, said as the regulatory requirements, governance systems and decision-making frameworks were becoming more sophisticated, making judgment calls had become an increasingly important part of day-to-day policy and decision-making.
“In making these judgment calls, the ability to identify and resolve professional and ethical issues cannot be under-estimated.
“It is from this perspective that we need to educate and equip entrants into the industry with good values, norms and ethics,” he said.
Muhammad said this at the launch of the two-week Asian Banking School’s Global Banking Leaders Programme here today.
The programme, starting today, is a flagship professional qualification for present and future banking leaders.
Muhammad also witnessed the signing of a joint declaration between AICB and the representatives of Malaysian commercial banks, which was held in conjunction with the programme.
He said the declaration signalled a clear commitment to the professionalism of the banking sector across all levels of the workforce.
The industry should position the chartered banker professional qualification as a masters-level equivalent qualification, he said.
Through the declaration, the banking industry’s top leaders and representatives of the Association of Banks in Malaysia gave their commitment to raise the professional standards. — Bernama
