KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Bursa Malaysia opened slightly higher today, in line with its regional peers, and in tracking overnight gains on Wall Street as investors awaited US Presidential election results, dealers said.

At 9.05am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was up 0.83 of-a-point to 1,644.65 from yesterday’s close of 1,663.82.

The index opened 0.30 of-a-point higher at 1,664.12.

A dealer said markets were also mostly up on various polls showing Democratic contender Hillary Clinton having a slight edge over her Republican rival, Donald Trump, in the US presidential race. The outcome will be known today as polling comes to an end.

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 each gained 0.4 per cent to close at 18,332.74 and 2,139.56 respectively.

Closer to home, Singapore’s Straits Times Index rose 0.34 per cent to 2,829.85, South Korea’s Seoul Composite Index improved 0.44 per cent to 2,012.22 and Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index gained 0.68 per cent to 9,280.38.

On the broader market, gainers led losers 84 to 78, while 107 counters remained unchanged, with 1,403 untraded and 24 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 45.79 million shares worth RM21.89 million.

The FBM Emas Index rose 2.68 points to 11,701.42, the FBMT100 Index gained 2.61 points to 11,411.71, and the FBM Emas Syariah Index surged 3.07 points to 12,285.70.

The FBM 70 fell 8.05 points to 13,540.03 and the FBM Ace rose 12.49 points to 4,970.44.

Sector-wise, the Plantation Index was 23.77 points higher at 7,832.23, the Industrial Index improved 2.34 points to 3,158.33, while the Finance Index rose 13.22 points to 14,468.13.

Of the heavyweights, Maybank bagged one sen for RM7.96, TNB rose four sen to RM14.36, Public Bank gained two sen to RM19.82, Petronas Chemicals was flat at RM6.95, while IHH Healthcare fell three sen to RM6.34. — Bernama
