KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — A father of six was sentenced to 14 years’ jail and given five strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today when he was found guilty of raping his teenage Indonesian maid about two years ago.
Judge Datin M. Kunasundary meted out the sentence on businessman Sufian Sulaiman, 44, after the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.
He was alleged to have raped the 19-year-old victim at a house in Taman Bukit Cheras here between 3am and 4am in end-July 2016.
However, the court allowed Sufian’s application for postponement of the jail term, pending appeal to the High Court, and raised the bail amount from RM12,000 to RM25,000 in one surety.
He was also ordered to report to the nearest police station twice a month, besides having his passport seized by the court.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Hafizza Sauni urged the court to mete out an appropriate sentence, considering the businessman had committed a vile and cruel offence against the victim who had come to the country to earn a living.
Sufian’s counsel Shah Rizal Abdul Manan, on the other hand, requested for a minimum sentence as his client had to take care of two wives and six children aged between three and 14, on an irregular income. — Bernama
