MUAR, April 8 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (PPBM) youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been officially announced as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for the Muar parliament seat.

His candidacy was announced last night at a Johor Pakatan Harapan Tour (Jelajah Pakatan Harapan Johor) gathering in Parit Jawa here that was attended by PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for Muar is Syed Saddiq,” said Dr Mahathir at the end of his speech, where he also announced other candidates for state seats that come under the Muar parliamentary constituency tonight.

This will be Syed Saddiq’s first contest in the polls. The 25-year-old award-winning debater is considered the youngest parliamentary candidate.

Syed Saddiq, a Johorean, is expected to go head-on with Barisan Nasional’s (BN) incumbent Muar MP Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, in the 14th general election.

In addition to Syed Saddiq, Dr Mahathir also announced Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub as the candidate in the Simpang Jeram state seat.

Last night, Salahuddin was also announced as the candidate for the Pulai parliamentary constituency.

The newly-named Simpang Jeram state seat was previously known as the Sungai Abong state seat.

This is also an indicator that the 56-year-old Johorean may also be the state’s Mentri Besar candidate if PH wins the state government as he is contesting in a state seat in north Johor near Muar.

Johor Amanah women's chief Norhayati Bachok and the party’s Ledang chief Faizul Amri Adnan will contest the Maharani and Serom state seats.

More than 3,000 people turned up at the event held here. The crowd consisted mainly of Chinese and Malays.
