PADANG TERAP, July 6 — The Cabinet made a correct decision to revoke the waiver on the Bahasa Melayu (BM) requirement for the appointment of Grade UD41 medical officers on contract basis.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the decision was in line with the government policy which required students to pass Bahasa Malayu and History papers to qualify for SPM certificates.
“It is the correct decision and in line with the government policy to uphold the Malay language as the national and official language,” he said when met at the wedding reception for his son at Padang Kerasak Community Centre, here today.
Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the Cabinet meeting had decided that there shall be no waiving of the BM pass requirement for jobs in the civil service.
Mahdzir said former students of international schools should meet the BM requirement if they want to join the civil service of this country.
“This is because international schools do not follow the national co-curriculum. If they want to join the civil service, they can sit for the BM paper which is held twice a year, in June and November.
“All private schools, national type Chinese and Indian schools have Malay language teachers. The Bahasa Melayu requirement is compulsory since they follow the national co-curriculum,” he added. — Bernama
