MALACCA, Feb 19 — The National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) has denied that a new drug known as ‘Strawberry Methaphetamine’ or ‘Strawberry Quick’ has entered the country as was being viralled in the social media.
AADK Deputy Director-General Datuk Izhar Abu Talib said the drug began to be distributed in the United States and the Arab countries followed by the Indian continent and Southeast Asia but it had still not entered the Malaysian market.
“It (the drug) was only distributed among and used by school students in the Indian continent before the distribution became widespread in 2010... originally it was used and distributed in the United States in 2007,” he told reporters after officiating the “Harm Reduction: Malacca Heads Toward HIV 3.0 Free” in conjunction with the Malacca Car Free Zone, here today.
Commenting further, Izhar said although the drug had yet to be detected in the Malaysian market, the community, particularly parents, were encouraged not to treat the matter lightly or to wash their hands off regarding the new drugs.
He said this was because it was not impossible that the drug would enter the country and parents must be concerned about the movements, acquaintances and actions of their children and family members.
“The emergence of the new drug can happen in various forms and packages and the drugs are targeting school students,” he said. — Bernama
