GEORGE TOWN, Nov 10 — All state or local government projects that need extensions will be referred to a special committee headed by state executive councillor Lim Hock Seng for approval.
Local government, traffic management and flood mitigation committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the committee is a way to monitor all state and council projects to prevent delays.
“So, if any project requires an extension of time, whether it is a JKR, JPS or PDC project, it will be referred to the special committee headed by Lim Hock Seng for approval first,” he said during a site visit to Chowrasta Market this morning.
He said all state and council projects must be monitored closely to ensure these stay on schedule.
“Any delays in any projects needed to be investigated with full explanations on the cause for the delay,” he said.
He added that lessons can be learnt from any weaknesses in design, planning, the contract offer or the implementation of the contract so that they could prevent similar delays in future projects.
The RM1 million Chowrasta Market upgrading project was delayed by one and a half years and the contractor was subsequently terminated.
A new tender was called to continue with the project and another contractor was awarded the project, bringing the total costs for the whole project to RM13.18 million.
