KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — Allegations of a syndicate killing people in Sarawak to harvest their organs are groundless, a senior state policeman said today.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk S. Dev Kumar sought to allay public fears after rumours of the killings went viral on social media in the wake of the purported arrest of its suspected killer in a village in Bau within the Kuching division.

“No such incident has ever occurred in Bau or anywhere else in the state,” he was quoted by national news agency Bernama to have said in a statement.

The policeman confirmed receipt of two reports against a Facebook posting of alleged incident, adding that the issue and accompanying photos of alleged victims whose organs were supposedly harvested were completely fabricated.

He warned Internet users against spreading the information, adding that police were investigating the case under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for abusing network facilities or service.

Those found guilty of violating the law can be punished with a fine of up to RM50,000 and jailed up to one year, and further fined RM1,000 for each day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

According to Bernama, rumours circulated that some villagers in Bau stumbled on the bodies of two people who were killed and had their organs removed, and though the police arrested a suspect in Kampung Daun Sigai, three other accomplices were at large and were using a heavily-tinted white van to look for more victims.
