SHAH ALAM, Oct 5 ― Datuk Jamal Md Yunos refused today to apologise to Maria Chin Abdullah over allegedly defamatory remarks, and went a step further to make his point by tearing up the Bersih 2.0 chief's letter of demand and flushing it down the toilet.

Maria Chin's lawyer had demanded Jamal apologise within two days for purportedly making statements that are “completely false, malicious and defamatory”.

This is in reference to his accusations that Bersih 2.0 was plotting to take over airports and topple the government and tying its upcoming rally to the Islamic State (IS).

At a press conference held in the restroom of the Selangor Umno headquarters today, a laughing Jamal told reporters that he would not retract his remarks or apologise to the Bersih chief.

He then proceeded to tear up Maria Chin's letter of demand before flushing it down the toilet.

Maria Chin’s lawyers had demanded that Jamal publish a full withdrawal of his statements and apology according to terms approved by her; as well as give a written undertaking not to publish the defamatory statements or make similar remarks.

They also demanded that he pay an “appropriate sum” of damages to compensate her for the injury done to her reputation.
