KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) said it provides financial assistance to Rizal Ramli, an impoverished man with seven children living at the Kota Damansara public flat whose plight received media attention.

The state agency responsible for collecting and distributing alms given by Muslims said Rizal’s family receives RM500 in monthly zakat assistance, besides getting monthly food aid, financial assistance for Ramadan and Hari Raya, as well as educational assistance for his children’s 2016 school session totalling RM2,710.

“Rizal is an ‘asnaf fakir’ who receives help from Zakat Selangor,” LZS said on its Facebook page yesterday, referring to the indigent who are eligible to receive zakat money.

Malay Mail Online recently published a special report on public housing, focusing on the difficult lives of residents at the Kota Damansara People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flat in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Rizal, who was one of the residents interviewed, had claimed he doesn’t get zakat funds because he receives RM450 monthly from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for his children.
