KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Umno’s Razlan Rafii has shown himself as unbecoming of the youth leader post he holds with his recent remarks accusing other races of disrespecting Malay culture, DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud said today.

The Perakian who is a member of her party’s national Youth executive committee asserted that the Federal Territories Umno Youth chief’s distorted remarks suggested the Malays needed to be shielded from certain ideas, adding that it was an insult to the race’s intelligence.

“I urge Razlan to reconsider his views and apologise to all Malaysians, especially Malays for underestimating their intelligence.

“If he fails to do so, then he does not deserve to be called a ‘youth leader’,” she said in a statement.

Dyana Sofya was responding to Razlan’s recent comments against DAP leaders whom he accused of disrespecting Malays through their actions and words over the past few months.

She said that contrary to Razlan’s allegations, it was Umno leaders who were insulting the very race they claimed to champion, by calling their party members “macai”, a local Cantonese colloquial phrase meaning “lackey”.

The Teluk Intan native who had run for elections in 2014 rebutted Razlan with a lengthy list of Umno Freudian slips, citing the latter’s ignorance about the country’s electoral system practice when he purportedly suggested she had contested in her home parliamentary constituency in a bid to become Perak mentri besar — which is only possible through a state assembly contest; his cultural ignorance by equating DAP leaders offering festive Hari Raya Puasa greetings in English; and his diplomatic flubs by equating DAP leaders attending Oktoberbest parties where alcohol is served.

She also reminded him that one of his party’s elected representatives had committed a major slip with a wild allegation that the “Malaysian Official 1” named by the US Department of Justice in its civil lawsuit to seize assets allegedly stolen from 1 Malaysia Development Berhad was the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, who is the paramount guardian of Malay interests.

“A multi-ethnic and diverse Malaysia is unlikely to tolerate a leader who likes to emphasis on disunity and throw down the gauntlet on every ethnic-religious differences,” Dyana Sofya stressed in her statement.

She then invited Razlan to enhance his knowledge on cross-race, gender and class issues by following her party’s initiatives on Facebook.
