KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 — Strong interest in cardiology has encouraged Kijang Emas Scholarship recipient R. Navinesh Nair to excel in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Navinesh, who is one of the three recipients of the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) scholarship, said his interest in cardiology deepened after learning that there was only one cardiologist in Johor.
“People in cardiology happens to be full of ideas,” he told Bernama after receiving the scholarship from BNM governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, here today.
The Kijang Emas Scholarship was given based on the students’ outstanding academic achievement in SPM as well as participation in co-curricular and sports activities.
Navinesh, a student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Putra, Kulai, Johor, scored 9 A+ in SPM and choose to study medicine in the United Kingdom.
Sharing his vision, Navinesh said he also hoped to uplift the standard of medical practice in the country to be on par with that of advanced countries.
Other recipients of the Kijang Emas Scholarship were Courtney Tang from Sekolah Menengah Methodist, Sibu, Sarawak who scored 10 A+ and Noor Adeebah Mohamed Razif from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (P) Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya, Selangor who scored 9 A+.
To date, 48 students have been awarded the Kijang Emas Scholarship of which 21 recipients had completed their undergraduate studies.
Earlier, Zeti in her speech decribed the scholarship as a special award that is consistent with the central bank’s continuous commitment to produce skilled manpower for the country.
“I am confident that all three of you will do your best and will contribute to the future of our country,” said Zeti.
For 2016 Kijang Emas Scholarship, BNM received a total of 146 applications from top SPM students scoring straight A+ for their 2015 SPM examination. — Bernama
