IPOH, March 5 — It was a search for close relatives along the North-South Expressway that ended in sadness when Major Azmi Abdul Rahim, 44, found they had died in a horrific road accident on Thursday.

The Assistant Commanding Officer of the 25th Battalion of the Royal Armed Forces in Bentong, Pahang, had been looking for his mother Rosmani Abd Ghani, 65, his younger brother, Azhar, 43, and Azhar’s two children, Muhammad Aizat, 18, and Muhammad Daniel, 13.

But hours into the search, news came from his older brother that they had died in the accident.

Azmi said the family had been planning to travel from Sungai Petani to his home in Shah Alam, Selangor, before picking up Aizat’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results.

“They left at about 10pm on Wednesday night and were expected to arrive between 4am and 5am the next morning.

“I tried calling them the next day but could not get through. That is when I started to worry,” he said.

Azmi said no one had a clue about their whereabouts.

He said he then contacted PLUS officials to check whether they had news of the Honda Accord his brother had been driving.

“They told me no accidents had been reported involving my family,” he said.

“Accompanied by army personnel, I searched for them along the expressway. We decided to stop at the Gopeng Rural Transformation Centre to have a meal and I received a call from Sharifuddin who told me about the accident.”

Azmi said funeral arrangements were being made in Terengganu.
