KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — The Bar Council said today it is still in the process of filing a complaint against lawyer Tan Sri Muhd Shafee Abdullah over his alleged misconduct after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was convicted for second sodomy charge in February.
Speaking at the Bar Council's headquarters here, Malaysian Bar president Steven Thiru said they have yet to issue a Muhd Shafee a show cause letter, which would require the latter to explain his actions.
“We have not decided on anything yet, we are still working on it...still in the process of preparing the show cause letter,” Steven said.
On March, the Bar Council said it was considering lodging a complaint against Shafee with the Advocates & Solicitors Disciplinary Board (ASDB).
The Bar president said then that in cases where the Bar Council is assessing possible misconduct, the particular lawyer will first be asked to explain themselves and will lodge complaints if they are not satisfied.
Steven stressed that the ASDB is independent from the Bar Council.
Following Anwar’s conviction, Shafee participated in an Umno-organised roadshow and gave media interviews in which he continued to attack the federal opposition leader, notably including calling him a “closet homosexual” during one public forum.
On February 10, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s conviction of Anwar for sodomising his former political aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, also retaining a five-year jail sentence.
