SIK, May 28 — A total of 1,369 illegal immigrants at the Belantik Immigration detention depot will be moved out to four other depots to give more space for Rohingya refugees.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said these illegals would be placed at the Immigration depots in Ajil, Machap Umboo, Bukit Jalil and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“We will move them soon as the Sik depot can only support 1,000 detainees but now the figure is more than double, reaching 2,869.
“We need to reduce the number to 1,500 and hope this will give comfort to the Rohingya refugees,” he told reporters during his visit to the depot, here, today to observe the condition of the refugees.
He said health screening had been conducted aided by 10 volunteers from the Health Department to detect and treat any disease among the refugees at the depot.
Wan Junaidi said most of these migrants suffered skin diseases and low blood pressure as they only fed on rice and seawater while stranded at sea.
“Here (at the depot), they are being served with four meals a day, as the government has allocated RM6.50 per day for each of them.
“We are confident they will recuperate soon due to the food and treatment given, plus there are some facilities for their activities,” he said.
He said the Immigration Department had 12 depots in Peninsular Malaysia to accommodate migrants. — Bernama
