GEORGE TOWN, May 27 — Penang Sentral has started a RM5 million preliminary works and feasibility studies on the the proposed Penang Sky Cab project, Lim Guan Eng announced today.
The Penang chief minister said the studies are proceeding seriously with tests on the seabed being conducted.
“This project will not involve any land reclamation except to build the towers for the sky cabs in the sea,” he said, adding that only existing land will be used to for a car park and a public transportation hub.
He also stressed that there were no land swap deals for the project, which is fully undertaken by Penang Sentral Sdn Bhd.
The Penang Sky Cab is purely a tourism and public transportation project, he added.
The project, which was first announced last month, will connect the Penang Sentral Transportation Hub in Butterworth to Noordin Street Ghaut in George Town.
The first phase of the Penang Sky Cab will feature 40 cabins that could transport about 1,000 passengers both ways per hour.
The aerial ride between the mainland and the island is expected to take only 15 minutes.
The project, which Lim said is still subjected to various approvals before it commences, is expected to be completed in 2018.
