PETALING JAYA, May 27 — The police will be widening their dragnet on traffic offenders by going straight to offices to nab those who have yet to pay their fines, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.

He said the public have so far settled just 50,000 out of the 1.5 million outstanding traffic offences since police launched Ops Warta on May 15.

“It looks like there are a lot of people out there who want to be arrested,” he said at a news conference here.

Yesterday, national news agency Bernama reported that a total of 8,946 traffic offenders who were issued arrest warrants under Ops Warta have surrendered to the police nationwide.

Police have also arrested 1,790 people, of which 528 will be charged for various offences.

Khalid today said the police will not ease their pursuit of delinquent traffic offenders, warning that they will extend their operation for as long as necessary to clear the backlog of summonses.

“My advice to those who have been issued arrest warrants is to surrender to the police and settle your summonses as soon as possible,” he said.
